Latest pre-game injury news?

We’re very excited to have Tammy [Abraham] is very, very good, feels very good and he can train at three o’clock today. If everything goes well, he’s in the squad.

Thiago will be out for the game, he’s not ready for the game.

And there are some issues with Christian Pulisic’s calf, nothing big, just feels tight. He was in a bit of pain so there’s a big question mark for Christian.

Kai Havertz is back in training and can come to us in Southampton.

How close is the competition between Kepa and Mendy for the number one goalkeeper?

Well, I encouraged him [Kepa] to see it as another opportunity and see it as a fresh start and see the possibilities for him in it and that’s what he did.

So he earned his right to play another game, he conceded two goals and that is the best a GK can have for his confidence.

And of course we see that because everyone likes to play. It is important for us that the group of goalkeepers is strong together.

I feel a strong bond in them even though they are competitors.

They are a team within the team and we need to have them all ready as the games are played at the highest level every three to four days.

Timo Werner and Ralph Hasenhuttl go back, was the manager correct in what he said about Werner’s best position?

I didn’t hear what he said, but everyone has a right to their own opinion.

I think Timo got off to a very good start, a very clinical and very efficient start at Chelsea under Frank [Lampard]. So I couldn’t see any problem in my opinion.

In fact, it was a big plus and it was a big reason for Timo to join the club, the connection with Frank. So I think that a change of clubs, like any player, is always a change in the environment, the culture and the league and takes time.

I can only talk about what I think of Timo now, and I see him gain confidence every day. And I saw the goal coming because he deserved it.

Maybe it’s just lucky that we both come from Germany and maybe the small percentages make him feel more secure than in the situations before.

But for me there was no doubt that Timo would come back from this situation because he has the quality and it is the quality to play in more than one position.

Good start, but learn more about the team in the coming weeks with tough games?

Yes, but honestly when we played it was a big, big game against Tottenham.

And the thing is, we do our things right, and that we’re brave enough to play our game and impose our style and swing on our opponents.

We want to play the same game no matter who is on the other side.

Sometimes it feels super, super difficult to play Barnsley. That day it was the hardest team to beat because it’s always like that in football.

The challenge now is to be ready tomorrow and after tomorrow we will see what we do against Atletico, then Man U and Liverpool.

But it goes step by step and the thing is how good we are, how good we play and how we can enforce our principles, our style and be the squad with the intensity and the rhythm to bring intensity to the field.

This is the challenge tomorrow, then the Champions League, then the league again, and it’s the biggest challenge all the time when you play.

So the focus is on Southampton and I firmly believe that I learn a lot about my team in every game, no matter who is on the other side, because we respect all opponents. At the moment of the game, it’s the toughest opponent and that’s it.

Because it’s always like that in football. The challenge is to be ready for tomorrow and after tomorrow we will see what we can do against Atletico, Man United and Liverpool. It goes step by step.

It’s always a test of how good we are at the moment we’re playing, to enforce our principles and style, and to be the squad with intensity and rhythm to bring intensity to the field. It’s a challenge for tomorrow and it’s a challenge in the Champions League, back in the league. All the time when you play, that’s the biggest challenge.

The focus is on Southampton. I think I learn a lot about my team in every game, no matter who is on the other side, because I respect my opponents. At the moment of the game, the toughest opponent is the guy on the other side, that’s it.

Kepa can overtake Mendy for first place?

I dont know.

Nothing has changed. Edou is number one and he deserves to be number one. It is a sensitive position where you need to be clear and not hide. You can’t hide your opinion in press conferences or in the dressing room.

Things have to be clear and you can’t be scared and we are not. Things haven’t changed. But as I said, we need three strong goalkeepers and everyone to be ready because the challenge is high.

The goals to be achieved in this association are high. We need everyone who is ready. Not just the goalkeeper, but all 22 players on the field must now be ready. That’s what they are needed for. If we need them for five minutes, they have to be ready to play those five minutes from the start or at halftime.

If you are not in the squad because of a bad decision, we may need you next time. This is the topic for the next few weeks and that includes Kepa. I can only repeat myself, Kepa played two good games with two goals against.

This is the best he can do for his trust, and it is also what we want him to do. It’s the best performance but nothing has changed. Edou is still number one.

What did you learn in England?

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel

I’ve seen an incredible work ethic from the players. You are hungry and eager to improve. Eager to compete as a team, which is the most important thing. I feel them all together as a group.

We can fully rely on them to play our principles in the game and decide how we approach the games. That’s the most important. When we have less time on the training ground, we work on video sessions in the video room to prepare for the games. We use the games to improve and get used to each other.

There are so many good behaviors, signals, and good minutes in our games that it is a pleasure to work with, and it is a very good level that we want to improve from. This is the challenge in top sport to improve every day.

To take carefully every day and to appreciate every day on the training ground or in the games and use it to improve. This is the feeling that I absolutely have and in which I am 100 percent involved, and I am pleased because that is why I am a coach.

Do you trust them already?

Of course there is no reason not to trust them. They delivered from the minute we are here and as I said, it’s trust not just because of the results, but also because of the way we interact and how they behave on the training pitch every day at Cobham .

Even in stressful situations in games. There is no reason to doubt it. From now on we try to improve, advance and guide them. I feel totally involved in this process and a very strong bond between the players. It’s a pleasure to be here and to work with the guys.

Fikayo Tomori – Lampard had a long term plan for him, is it yours?

To be completely honest I haven’t spent too many minutes here thinking about Tomori, not because I don’t like him and not that I don’t see any potential, but every minute here in Cobham is for the people who are here.

It is a tradition at Chelsea that many players are on loan. You get minutes elsewhere if you can’t do regular minutes here. That’s good because my goal is always to have players who can make it in different circumstances, who can show their qualities in different cultures and clubs. This is always a good sign.

We’ll have this conversation about the loaned people for the next few weeks and months, but of course I have a general impression of Tomori, which means he has high, high potential, but I’m not into the details right now.

This will come when it does.

Chrisitan Pulisic – Another Injury, Lampard said worried about injuries and speculation about his future?

Sure yes. That is my point of view, of course yes.

Chelsea bought Chrisitan for a reason, its quality and its potential. It’s our job to get the best out of it. He has proven over many weeks that he is at the level of a regular Chelsea player.

The challenge now is to improve and maintain your level, and to maintain that level, keep improving.

We’re not worried or concerned, but the medical department is there. We have little problems with the calf. He stopped training yesterday before it became an injury. So I wouldn’t say it’s an injury, it’s risk management. And it’s based on the history of the injuries. We didn’t want to go into the same cycle.

The main thing for Chrisitan is to stay positive, keep your head up and be ready as he can make a huge impact when starting his intensity or going off the bench. Absolutely no decisions are made for the summer, there is simply no time for that.

Lack of minutes for Hakim Ziyech

It’s actually my fault, not his, it’s my tough decisions for Mason right now [Mount], Callum [Hudson-Odoi] and for Christian [Pulisic] sometimes in the half positions where we seem strongest.

It’s the same for Hakim right now and some other players have had tough decisions to make. It’s never easy, but it’s good, we have quality to make our decisions.

There are choices for other players that mean Hakim is suffering. I can absolutely understand that and be okay with it. In this case it is my responsibility and fault that he can no longer show his potential.

When I look at the schedule and the rhythm for the next games, I can be sure that we will all need our players. No matter how difficult things are for you personally, I can’t say anything bad Hakim, he had a good meeting yesterday and showed that he is ready.

When the moment comes, we expect the best Hakim Ziyech. It’s not easy, I agree and understand, but sometimes it is like that in some moments in a club like Chelsea with a squa that always wins.

Sometimes you have to wait, he’s not the only one suffering from these choices and we’ll turn around. If he pays attention and shows that he is ready when he is needed, things will turn around again, I am sure.
