The Premier League season is coming to an end soon and with the summer transfer window opening July 1st, managers and players will be busy discussing their future plans.

But while several Premier League clubs prepare to wipe their checkbooks to make big bucks, there’s nothing like a bargain or, better yet, a free transfer.

Since the 1995 judgment of John Bosman, footballers in Europe have had the freedom to terminate their contracts in search of a better payday elsewhere.

Recent examples include Aaron Ramsey, who is reportedly making £ 400,000 a week with Juventus after leaving Arsenal in 2019. Chelsea also nabbed Thiago Silva after his contract with PSG expired last summer and the Brazilian has proven to be one of the newcomers of the season.

The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the clubs’ finances suggests that free transfers could be vital this summer as there are still many familiar names available.

Here are 10 players who can leave for free this summer and join a Premier League club …

Sergio Aguero

It seems anyone who gets Aguero’s signature this summer could pick up one of the best bargains in recent history.

The 32-year-old was absent for most of the season due to injuries and coronavirus. Still, it was surprising that Man City had decided not to offer the Argentine a new deal.

There are doubts about his long-term fitness, but Aguero is still a keen finisher on his day and would strengthen any top European team even if his strength faded a little.

After losing the chance to sign Aguero in 2011, Chelsea are set to lead the way to secure the Manchester City striker with a free transfer this summer, AS reports.

PSG and Juventus have also been attributed an interest, while a return to the youth club Independiente cannot be ruled out.

David Luiz

The Brazilian has made 29 appearances for Arsenal this season but with no new deal in sight, his agents have reportedly started looking for potential applicants for a move.

The 34-year-old, who joined Emirates Stadium from Chelsea in 2019, has had a mixed time in north London. The Gunners also have Pablo Mari, Callum Chambers, Rob Holding and Gabriel as center-backs, which means he can leave.

Luiz made no secret of his desire to return to Benfica before hanging up his boots while CBS Sports claims the defender is keen to secure a move to an MLS team in the US.

Jerome Boateng

Boateng had a brief stint at Manchester City before joining Bayern Munich and there remains a possibility that he could return to England on a free transfer this summer.

Bayern’s sports director Hasan Salihamidzic has confirmed that the 32-year-old will not be offered a new contract after a decade in the Allianz Arena.

The center-back has won eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League twice and his experience would be useful to most Premier League teams. Tottenham have been linked with Boateng in the past while Arsenal could be an option if Luiz doesn’t renew their deal.

It’s no secret that Barcelona have long had an interest in praising Wijnaldum outside of Liverpool, but there is still uncertainty about where it will land this summer.

The 30-year-old Dutchman is expected to leave Anfield after five years with the Reds. The club is said not to be ready to meet its contract requirements, the Sunday Times reported.

According to talkSPORT, Juventus, PSG and Inter Milan should keep an eye on their contract interruption, although a move to a Premier League rival is still possible.

Memphis Depay

It is inconceivable to believe that after a successful four year stay in France, Depay would want to try his luck elsewhere. However, the Lyon striker has so far refused to obtain a contract extension and interested clubs are circling around.

The Dutchman was on the verge of joining a cheap deal with Barcelona last summer before Blaugrana pulled the plug, although La Liga giants have every chance of reviving the deal after Mundo Deportivo spotted him looking for a flat in Catalonia.

Marca recently reported that Liverpool, along with Juventus, made an offer for the 27-year-old who is sure to have a few options to choose from. But after his disastrous 18-month stint at Manchester United, few could accuse him of doubting his return to England.

The Real Madrid captain has again faced a stalemate with the club after signing a new contract.

Even at 35, Ramos remains an integral part of Madrid’s plans, but a poor performance against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final defeat suggests the center-back’s best days are beyond him.

He missed the chance to join Manchester United in 2016 and is unlikely to join the Premier League anytime soon.

Rather, it seems that his future could lie in the USA, China or Japan, where the Spaniards Andres Iniesta and Fernando Torres spent the last days of their careers.

It appears that Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has resigned himself to losing one of his trusted lieutenants in Lucas Vazquez after turning down a new contract.

The 29-year-old has never been a regular starter at the Santiago Bernabeu and may prefer a new adventure after spending his entire career in Madrid, apart from one season at Espanyol.

The Spain international has reportedly rejected the advances made by city rivals Atletico Madrid. AC Milan are in the best position to sign a three-year deal for him, according to Calciomercato. Chelsea had reportedly shown interest in the versatile winger, who appears to have played his last game for Los Blancos after suffering a posterior cruciate ligament injury.

Dubbed “the next Gianluigi Buffon” after making his AC Milan debut at the age of 16, the goalkeeper was able to follow in the legendary Italian’s footsteps with Juventus.

The 22-year-old Donnarumma has already made 247 appearances for the Rossoneri but has turned down an offer for a five-year contract, with his agent Mino Raiola keeping his options open.

Chelsea and Manchester United have followed Italy’s No. 1 with doubts about the future of Kepa Arrizabalaga and David de Gea.

But it seems Donnarumma might prefer to stay in his homeland, with Juve preparing a lucrative £ 10m-a-year offer, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport.

In all cases in which Draxler was transferred to the Premier League, the German still has to change.

With his PSG contract expiring in June 2021, the midfielder will no doubt have a fair share of admirers.

Draxler, who was only 27, made a surprising move to join the French champions for £ 37million in January 2017 after turning down Arsenal three years earlier. The Gunners have been suspected of targeting Draxler as a cheap replacement for Martin Odegaard, who is expected to return to Real Madrid after his loan.

Injuries and poor form have resulted in Draxler breaking the pecking order at Parc des Princes, and the midfielder recently admitted he would enjoy a return to Germany, with Bayern Munich considering a move, according to Sport1.

The playmaker will be a hot property this summer if he decides to leave AC Milan. The midfielder has reportedly stalled over signing a new five-year deal.

The Turkish international has scored four goals and made eight assists in 30 Serie A games this season. Milan were looking for a place to qualify for the Champions League.

Calhanoglu is said to hold back to make a final decision as he is dying to compete next season. Tuttosport claim that anonymous English clubs are monitoring their situation should Milan end up outside the top four in Serie A.

* At the time of writing, the aforementioned players’ contracts expired in June 2021.
