Aberdeen Football Club and manager Derek McInnes have agreed to part ways after eight years.
The manager and his assistant Tony Docherty are leaving the club with immediate effect.
Dave Cormack, Chairman of the AFC said: “During his tenure, Derek raised the bar and delivered a level of consistency that has not been seen in the club for many years. He qualified for Europe each season and scored a memorable Scottish League Cup win at Celtic Park in the 2013-14 season with 43,000 Dons fans in attendance.
“The results since the turn of the year have been clearly disappointing and frustrating for everyone. Derek and I checked where we were and agreed that this was the right time for him to step down. The club now has the option to appoint a new manager ahead of the new season where we will have to work with a number of non-contracted players to build a competitive squad.
“Derek and Tony leave with our thanks and gratitude for what they have accomplished during their tenure. We wish you all the best for the future. “
In the remaining six league games, an interim team led by Paul Sheerin and supported by Barry Robson and Neil Simpson will attempt to finish European football with a third place.
Cormack added, “The board of directors will begin the search for the new management team immediately and has a clear timetable. In the meantime, we believe we have a robust interim solution for the remainder of the season and the Scottish Cup, for which everything is still up to date! “
Commenting on the announcement, Derek McInnes said, “This season has been unprecedented due to a number of factors and I am as frustrated as anyone whose results have not reached the high standard we have set.
“My motivation to be successful has never diminished. During my eight year tenure, my staff and I have worked hard to raise expectations and set a minimum standard that should be required at a club like Aberdeen FC.
“I would like to thank all the players who have played on my teams over the years, my current staff and players for their efforts, and all of the staff behind the scenes for their hard work and dedication. To the supporters for their continued support and of course to the board of directors for their support during my time at the club. “
