Borussia Dortmund has apologized and said the club will speak to the police after some of its supporters broke coronavirus regulations after they gathered outside their training grounds after the club’s 4-0 win over arch-rivals Schalke on Saturday .

Two goals from Erling Haaland and one each from Jadon Sancho and Raphael Guerreiro sealed the victory in the Veltins Arena and brought Dortmund to sixth place in the Bundesliga.

An estimated 200 supporters, some of whom had lit torches, violated Germany’s strict social distancing rules and waited for the Dortmund team bus to return to their Brackel training center.

Midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud shared a live video of the scenes with players partying off the bus on his Instagram account.

“With all the understandable joy of winning the derby, there were public violations of the coronavirus rules that will not be tolerated when the team returned to the training ground last night,” said a statement by the club published on Sunday.

“Around 150 to 200 fans cheered for the team outside the training area, some of whom did not wear masks and observed the guidelines on social distancing. The players celebrated with the fans – without leaving the bus – and some even filmed it exuberantly.

“We can only apologize and promise to speak to the police and everyone involved very soon about how such scenes can be completely ruled out in public in the future.”
