IVAN TONEY has warned rivals that once they shift into high gear, his Brentford side will be unstoppable.

Striker Toney scored his first hat trick since arriving at Bees in September in a 7-2 win over Wycombe on Saturday, scooping 19 points in 25 championship games.

Brentford is the longest undefeated run in English football

It has helped expand Brentford’s undefeated league run to 18 games – the best in English football ahead of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

The win put the bees in third place and they will advance to the automatic promotion spots if they win their game in hand.

The huge profit margin also ensured that they had a better goal difference than any of their top 6 rivals in the championship.

And Toney says the competition should be concerned.

He said: “There are certain games we’ve played that haven’t been in top gear and we’ve still got a result.

“As soon as we have put into gear we need, there is no stopping us.

“I think we showed part of it against Wycombe – and hopefully it will continue.

“If we want to get where we want, in the Premier League, we have to show character.”

Toney wasn’t officially credited with the first of his trios, a volley, but replays showed the ball crossed the line before Tariqe Fosu made it happen – and the club promised to appeal if the mistake isn’t corrected.

Toney added, “Everyone in the locker room said there were three targets. Tariqe is like a brother to me and even he admitted it and said it was an exaggeration. Whoever is responsible for changing it, I am sure they will. ”

Bee boss Thomas Frank was pleased that Toney ended a meager run that went back to mid-December.

Frank said: “I’m very happy for him. If I could have picked one player to meet before this game, it was Ivan.

“I’ve never doubted that he would score in any of the next two or three games, if not this one, but it was important because a striker needs to score to be confident.

“The big difference between good teams and top teams is the mentality they show. We had to do the same high quality performance against Wycombe as we did against Swansea. “
