Brentford is on the verge of hitting a deal worth around £ 13.5m to sign Celtic center-back Kristoffer Ajer, Daily Telegraph northern soccer reporter John Percy reports.

What is the latest Kristoffer Ajer transfer news?

The reporter states that the Hoops have already agreed the structure of the payments and the fee with the Premier League newbies who will see the Norwegian exit from Celtic.

Did Brentford win the race for Ajer?

If Brentford actually won the race to sign Ajer, it will end a week-long transfer saga that has seen some clubs involved. Norwich and Bayer Leverkusen were keen to sign the 23-year-old but it was reported that both had turned down £ 10m offers.

Newcastle were interested too, but they were put off by Celtic’s asking price. It has been reported that Celtic turned down an offer of around £ 15m including add-ons from Brentford, but now it appears the Hoops have an acceptable offer.

What are Ager’s stats from his time at Celtic?

Ajer was fortunate enough to play for Celtic during a very successful period. Ajer won three championship titles, three Scottish trophies and three league cups during his time with the Hoops. He was rewarded for his achievements with the appointment of PFA Scotland Team of the Year 2018-19.

Ajer memorably scored the winning penalty against Hearts, which secured the 2019-20 Scottish Cup and the Bhoys’ fourth home triple in a row.

To his credit, while Celtic struggled last season, Ajer did not let the illness sway and was voted the club’s Player of the Year by his Celtic teammates.

Ajer played 176 games for Celtic, scored seven goals and came up with seven assists.

One small disappointment for Ajer is that he was never able to play in the Champions League group stage for Celtic. The closest he came to the tournament was when he came on the bench a few times in 2017/18.

Ajer may be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Virgil van Dijk, who left Celtic for Southampton and is now a Champions League regular after joining Liverpool.

Has Celtic already spent the Ajer money?

While Celtic will generate an eight-figure amount from the Ajer exit, the Hoops may have already spent some of that money. Celtic reportedly spent £ 3.5m on winger Liel Abada.

It has been reported that a £ 4.3m fee has been agreed with Rubin Kazan to bring in center-back Carl Starfelt – possibly Ayer’s replacement.

That’s nearly £ 8m to spend on two signings, with about six weeks left of the transfer window. It could well be that Ajer’s transfer will fund Celtic’s bigger signings this summer.
