Team news before Newcastle and how is Andreas Christensen?

No, it wasn’t a concussion at all. It was like I said headache so it was better we took it off.

For the other guys it’s Friday, we still have three training sessions.

It should be absolutely fine when Timo Werner comes back. It may still be too close for Kai and safe for Thiago. For Thiago, we strive for Southampton, we try, try hard. Let’s see if he can do it, we can’t promise.

And for Kai we want to see today whether he is outside. It’s going to be a very short time for Kai so maybe he’ll miss this match too.

When you think about Barnsley, did you say you didn’t want to be too harsh on your players?

No, doesn’t have to be too harsh, doesn’t have to be too strict, but has to be clear.

There are things we can do much better than we did in Barnsley yesterday.

We barely managed to get into the opposing box. It was very difficult to escape the first press to get the game into the opposing half. So we fought for 45 minutes in the first half.

The second half between 45 and 75 was our best time in the game, when we were in full control and able to score.

But still, in the last 15 minutes of being unable to escape our own half and struggling to cope with Barnsley’s physical style in the last few minutes. That might end up making us feel uncomfortable because we couldn’t keep that control.

So are we going to tell them the truth? Yes, I said that at the beginning.

We’ll allow ourselves to be honest if we don’t like the performance, and if we can do things, we’ll show them. And if we have a top game but don’t win, we’ll still show them the positive things.

There are things that can be done better, we will focus on the details, but in general I don’t want to be too tough and I still stick to this plan.

We had different circumstances, we had ten changes, with a lack of rhythm and a lack of confidence, the pitch was very difficult to play and the opponent was playing a very tough match.

So we will focus on the details and help them understand what we can do better as well. And we are obviously going to prepare for Newcastle, which is going to be a difficult challenge, and we have to be prepared for that.

Social media abuse – how does it compare with France and Germany?

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel speaks to the press

I would say I haven’t had any experience on social media, maybe also because I’m not a social media guy.

I have enough to do to control my smartphone and that is by far enough for me. I can spend days without my smartphone and not miss anything.

But in general I trained myself not to read about myself, I trained myself, I had to study and train myself not to read about myself, not in good times and not in bad.

Because what’s out there has an impact on you and you can’t stop it, you can’t let it have an impact on you.

If it’s out there and everyone talks high about you, it triggers something in you and if they talk badly about you, of course, then that stays with you too.

And it shouldn’t. Because the goal is to be confident in the best possible way, to be confident and not need the admiration of outside people.

And this is also a kind of mechanism for me to protect myself. As I said, I’m not a social media guy. So I’m more or less the last guy to notice when something is going on on social media.

The abuse is completely unacceptable, that is 100 percent clear, there is no other opinion in the club and of course not from me.

And maybe fewer words of mine are more. That is unacceptable and we have to fight it.

Advantageous to play so many games in a short amount of time?

Every coach in the world might want four weeks with a new team to get to know the habits and characteristics of the players. Maybe the good thing is that we didn’t think about it because we didn’t have time to think about it.

It was the situation right now to intervene, either a yes or a no. We had to decide to train a day before the wolves. When we arrived we did and it was a benefit. We had a lot of games and in games you get to know your team better.

The guys can show their competitive spirit, their mentality and you can pretty much see everything. What we do now is learn and trust each other as we play in the toughest competition in Europe.

It is what we do and it’s a good experience as there is no other way right now. There are no doubts or complaints about it. It can also be a bumpy road, nobody wanted that yesterday.

We want to perform better, but in the end the most important thing is that you are in the next round in a cup game. We did it, so it wasn’t all bad.

There is a lot of room to improve. That is a good thing. We have three days to prepare for the next game and we will take advantage of it.

Need rest, but need to drill them some more? Is it a balancing act?

Yes, it’s always a balancing act right now and that’s what we think about most of the time when we’re here in Cobham. How much input do we get? How much information do we put into the players?

But in the end, less is more. It’s a very popular phrase, but less is more. It is our management of how we handle help and support, just as we sometimes just leave them alone so they can process their new moves, approaches, or even just their performance and the approach of a new trainer.

We try to adapt, talk a lot, and it’s a constant management. It never stops and it will be for the next few months where we think about how much we can give to the team.

Callum Hudson-Odoi changes position – do adaptable players get more chances?

I don’t know if it’s a benefit or not. If you have a specialist with the six, he’ll play the six. No need to push the six to a center-back or full-back. But if you have players like Callum and we have the opportunity to ask different questions to the opponents and defenders of the opponent, why not?

Callum started on the right and ended on the left. This gives us the opportunity to react, be flexible and help the team structurally and informatively. It’s clearly not a disadvantage, but if we felt like a player should only be used as No. 9, we wouldn’t be using him on the wing.

Academy player important to you?

Maybe you know my last clubs, it was always like that. The door to my office has always been open to any of the academy’s coaches or officials, and I love to watch the academy’s training and in-house games, but unfortunately that is not possible at the moment as we are in a bubble here and we have different zones and we cannot enter certain zones.

It’s more difficult than usual, but I think I’ve always been in a club. The more people we have who can get into the first team, the more the fans love.

The young players absolutely care about Chelsea, they have lived it for over many years and they live the spirit. It’s a good moment and, on the other hand, it’s also the hardest path they choose at Chelsea, Paris and Dortmund. It’s one of the toughest challenges you can face.

Not only is it straight, it’s bumpy at times, you go on loan, but I like that they took up the challenge of making it here and I feel from the guys like they absolutely make it as a Chelsea player want, not just as a Premier League player. This is the spirit we want to feel, we are going to push it.

Kai Havertz has not been able to show his best form since joining Chelsea

Kai Havertz – previous fights. What can you do to make sure we see Leverkusen Havertz?

I’m pretty sure we’ll see this, it takes time and there is no short answer. If there was one, I would speak to him to realize his full potential.

What we know and what we can rely on is this potential in him. There is logic in showing it on the field. Every transfer and club change is different, sometimes it takes more time to adapt, sometimes it’s quick, sometimes it’s a process.

All we can do is push, support, and give him what he needs, and we’ll find out.

He got off to a really good start with us and I feel like I see a man who is confident, humble and incredibly talented.

There is no doubt that he will show this, the sooner the better. Unfortunately he missed training and games for us and hopefully he will come back in the next few days as I am convinced that he will have a huge impact.

Do others have to imitate his role without Thiago? And to make all six doubles happy?

Yes, and first of all I think that three for two positions is nowhere near too many. That means everyone is on board and available when we have to make difficult decisions, then it’s good, we have difficult decisions to make, it’s my job to manage them and it’s my job, including the bank guys to trust. It’s impossible to achieve our goals with just 12 or 13 players, it’s just not possible.

Having the three boys is a great gift for me. Having a fourth man like Billy Gilmour is absolutely necessary at this level. We need exactly this quality and I am not worried about the management.

I feel the bond between the players, yes we have to improve when things get difficult or complicated and we have to prove that we are a strong group. Today I feel a good atmosphere and I can focus on it to create a special bond between the players.
