The postponed Euro 2020 tournament is just getting into full swing, but the new national football season is already looming.

The Premier League will announce their games for 2021/22 tomorrow morning (Wednesday), with the first round of games being played on the weekend of March 14th / 15th. August.

Plymouth Argyle and the other 71 EFL clubs will have to wait a little longer to find out their schedule for the next season.


They’ll be released on Thursday, June 24th at 9 a.m., with Argyle being supported in League One this season by relegated championship trio Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe Wanderers.

Promotion to the third division of English football is the promoted League Two quartet of Bolton Wanderers, Cambridge United, Cheltenham Town and Morecambe.

The 2021/22 EFL campaign in all three divisions begins a week before the Premier League on Saturday, August 7th.

The Argyle players will begin prep training next Wednesday 23 June with their first warm-up game on Saturday 3 July at the Southern League Plymouth Parkway in Bolitho Park.

The pilgrims were then scheduled for a possible Spanish training camp, but with the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions that are unlikely to continue.

Argyle confirmed more preseason games at Saltash United and Tavistock on Wednesday July 14 – when Ryan Lowe’s squad is split in two to fill the games – as well as home fixtures against Swansea City and Middlesbrough.

The U18 preseason games have also been announced, starting on Tuesday July 6th at the Elburton Villa.

After the beginning of the League One campaign on August 7th, Argyle will play a first-round tie in the Carabao Cup in the week from August 9th.

The Papa John’s Trophy for clubs in the first and second division and invited teams from the Category One Academy will begin three weeks later.

Argyle’s shortest journey during the League One campaign will be the 315-mile round-trip ticket to Cheltenham.

In total, Ryan Lowe’s Pilgrims will cover 12,268 miles for their 23 away games next season, an average of 533 per game.

Only eight of the games include round trips of less than 500 miles, with the 345 to Portsmouth being the second shortest.

The League One campaign ends on the weekend of April 30th, May 1st, 2022, the play-off final is scheduled for Saturday, May 21st, 2022.
