Former Manchester United teammates Ashley Young and Romelu Lukaku brought Inter Milan to a 2-1 win over Sassuolo in Serie A on Wednesday night, keeping Antonio Conte’s lead at the top of the table.
Lukaku headed Young’s cross home to put Inter in the lead by just 10 minutes and Lautaro Martinez ended a counterattack just past the hour to get the hosts under control.
Hamed Junior Traore took late consolation for Sassuolo but Inter saw their 10th straight league win to move one step closer to the Italian crown.
Defending champions Juventus won with a 2-1 win over Napoli that night, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala scoring the goal before Lorenzo Insigne scored a late penalty.
As a result of these results, Inter have an 11 point lead over second-placed AC Milan and 12 points over Juventus. Nine games are still pending.
In Spain, Real Sociedad moved up to fifth with a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao.
In a rematch in the 2020 Copa del Rey final last weekend, Athletic Bilbao believed they had won when Asier Villalibre scored a goal five minutes before the end of the game. But their Basque rivals tied when visiting goalkeeper Unai Simon misinterpreted Roberto Lopez’s cross at his distant post.
