The main soccer rivalry in southeast North Carolina begins in spring 2021.
The New Hanover and Hoggard soccer teams announced on Monday that they would play against each other this Friday night. The first week games in New Hanover and Hoggard have been postponed and the high schools in North Brunswick and South Brunswick have recently suspended all sports and other after-school activities.
The game on Friday starts at 6 p.m. at Legion Stadium. All Mideastern Conference football games this season will be played at 6 p.m.
Hoggard and New Hanover were originally scheduled to play against each other on April 9th, the last week of NCHSAA regular football season. The teams will now try to play other postponed games this week.
If it is not possible to play other games this week, schools can play a second time, according to Brad Lewis, Hoggard’s sporting director.
New Hanover beat Hoggard 30-7 last season when the Wildcats ran away with the MEC title. Previously, Hoggard had won the previous two meetings with a combined result of 72-7.
The last time a game between the two schools was decided by less than 10 points was in 2013 when Hoggard scored a 21:18 win over New Hanover.
In accordance with local and state authorities, only 100 fans are allowed to enter the Legion Stadium to watch the game on Friday. Fans can watch the game online for free by searching for “Hoggard Sports” on YouTube.
