Manchester City’s £ 100m offer for Jack Grealish is expected to be accepted by Aston Villa.

While Villa has not yet officially responded to City’s offer – which was made on Friday – it is clear that they are now ready to allow their captain to leave.

That means Grealish will now have to decide whether to move to the Etihad Stadium, which would be the biggest transfer in English football history.

The previous record is held by Paul Pogba, who returned to Manchester United from Juventus in 2016 for £ 89million.

Although they are now ready to accept City’s offer, Villa Grealish offered a new and improved contract earlier this summer, despite only signing a five-year deal last September.

Neither Villa nor City have commented on the possible transfer.

City also want to sign Grealish’s English team-mate Harry Kane and earlier made the Tottenham striker a £ 100m offer in the window.

Spurs turned down City’s offer despite Kane making it clear to the club that he would like to leave north London this summer.

City is unlikely to be able to afford both Grealish and Kane this summer unless they sell some first-team players.

Grealish’s X-Factor and its special appeal

Peter Smith from Sky Sports …

“Aston Villa fans have been praising him for years, celebrating a special talent that emerged from their youth. It took some time for fans of other clubs to come on board, but Jack Grealish and his X-Factor won over all judges.” At Euro 2020, the sound of English supporters cheering for his warm-ups and singing his name and urging Gareth Southgate to throw him into the action was the perfect illustration of this.

“He only played 137 minutes in this tournament but it was a big story all along. His two assists and cameo from the bench were a tantalizing glimpse of what England had in the locker room and fueled the discussion how they should attack.

“It’s this enticing, exciting, breakthrough potential that makes him so hot.

“This summer at Wembley the change in approach by the opposing defenders when it came into play was evident. They fell deeper. They doubled in. They looked nervous and wary of what might come next. It’s a growing trend that we’ve seen in the Premier League and Grealish’s prowess has now earned Grealish’s reputation internationally.

“This enticing possibility of what Grealish could achieve at the top of the Premier League or in the Champions League is clearly a question being considered at Manchester City. The great Pep Guardiola is drawn to Grealish’s potential.”

“But those deep Villa roots mean that Grealish won’t be easy to win outside of his home club. His iconic status there would be improved if he stayed. It’s a pivotal moment in his career and just like it is during the European Championship real intrigue with what he does next. “
