Manchester United are expected to confirm the £ 73m signing of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho within a few days.
Sancho completed a medical evaluation Tuesday before his transfer was completed after already negotiating personal terms with the Old Trafford Club.
The former Manchester City youth player is expected to go on vacation after the formalities are completed as the new Premier League season is less than a month away.
The 21-year-old was one of three English players who missed a penalty in the defeat in the Euro 2020 final against Italy at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, along with soon-to-be clubmates Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka from Arsenal.
All three players received racist abuse on social media after the defeat.
Dortmund’s asking price for Sancho was over £ 85m at the start of the window, while the deal is also £ 35m below the £ 108m valuation the German club gave him last summer.
Sancho’s contract with Dortmund runs until summer 2023 and they have decided to sell it now and not next summer if only one year of the contract would have resulted in a loss of value.
The Bundesliga team is actively looking for a replacement, with Donyell Malen and Noni Madueke from PSV they have scouted two players extensively.
City retain a sell-off clause and are poised for a godsend from their cross-city rivals should the transfer go through.
The winger went through Watford’s academy before joining City in 2015, but moved to Dortmund in 2017 after turning down an offer of a new contract at Etihad Stadium.
Sancho quickly established himself as a key player at Dortmund and scored 50 goals in 137 games for the German club.
Analysis: Why Man Utd Sancho. want
One could argue that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team has more pressing needs in other areas. Many fans may prefer a center-back.
But Sancho has become one of the most exciting young players in the world over the past few years, and it’s easy to see why United are so determined to finally get his man.
Here Nick Wright goes over the reasons …
Maguire: Sancho ‘exceptional ‘| Exciting times for Man Utd
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has described England team-mate Sancho as an “exceptional talent” and believes his upcoming arrival signals exciting times for the club.
“Jadon is a top player, an exceptional talent, a young lad with a lot of experience,” said Maguire at a press conference in England ahead of the EURO 2020 semi-final win against Denmark earlier this month.
“His numbers speak for themselves what he has achieved in Germany. He’s a great player.
“Of course we have exciting times ahead of us and we hope we can make it over the line.”
Man Utd gave permission to join Varane. to approach
Manchester United have had positive talks with Raphael Varane’s representatives after he was given permission to speak to the Real Madrid defender about a move to Old Trafford.
Nothing has been agreed between United and Varane camp, although personal conditions are unlikely to be an issue.
If the terms can be agreed, United are expected to start talks with Real Madrid for a fee – although Paris Saint-Germain are also in talks with Varane.
The 28-year-old center-back is believed to be open to the move if an agreement can be reached.
United are believed to be cautious as they don’t want what happened to Sergio Ramos to repeat itself when they were encouraged for the player to come to Old Trafford only to sign a new deal at the Bernabeu.
Varane still has a year left on his Real Madrid deal and United are looking to negotiate a lower transfer fee as he knows he can sign a pre-contract in January.
The France international is one of several center-backs United has their sights set on this summer as they make the position a priority to strengthen.
Sky Sports News has already announced its interest in Atalanta’s Cristian Romero, Seville’s Jules Kounde and Lille’s defender Sven Botman.
