The new season is almost here, with Nottingham Forest set for a trip to face Coventry City on Sunday for their opening Championship game.

Boss Chris Hughton will be hoping there is still the possibility of some movement on the transfer front before then.

The Reds remain short of options in a number of areas of the pitch, having so far added only goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in the summer transfer window.

Strengthening at full-back and in attack are particular priorities for the Forest manager as he hopes to mount a promotion push this term.

But plenty of players continue to be linked with moves to and from the City Ground. Here’s a round-up of the latest news and rumours on the transfer front.

Winger linked

Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson could be reunited with Morgan Rogers after the promising Manchester City winger was linked with a move to the City Ground.

Johnson and Rogers were teammates during their loan spells at Lincoln City last season and both were instrumental as the Imps reached the League One play-off final, where they lost 2-1 to Blackpool.

According to the Athletic, Forest’s interest in Rogers was triggered as they monitored Johnson’s progress at Sincil Bank.

The report adds that Forest would be open to a loan or a permanent transfer, with Rogers valued at around £9million by Man City.

Bid rejected

Nottingham Forest are said to have had an initial bid for midfielder Josh Laurent rejected by Reading.

The midfielder, who was named the Royals’ Player of the Year last season, is believed to be a target for Reds boss Chris Hughton as he looks to strengthen his squad at the City Ground.

Laurent has impressed for the Royals during his debut season in Berkshire and has a year left on his contract at the Madejski.

The 26-year-old established himself as a key player last season, scoring three times in 46 appearances.

On the move

Nottingham Forest midfielder Fouad Bachirou is closing to sealing a move away from the club, according to reports.

The 31-year-old midfielder joined the Reds as one of many signings by Sabri Lamouchi last summer before Chris Hughton ‘s arrival.

But the former Malmo man has made just three appearances since moving to the City Ground, including only one under Lamouchi.

His last outing in the Garibaldi was as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with Barnsley on January 30; his time on Trentside has resulted in just 32 minutes of Championship football.

Defender interest

Nottingham Forest are understood to be interested in versatile Reading defender Tom Holmes.

A centre-back by trade, the 21-year-old filled in at right-back for the Royals for much of last season – impressing in a position Chris Hughton’s side are looking to strengthen in the transfer window.

Cyrus Christie made that spot his own during his loan spell at the City Ground in 2020/21, but is now back at parent club Fulham.

And with Carl Jenkinson having been told he can move on this summer, the Reds are short of options.

Josh Doig in action for Hibernian

Doig uncertainty

Nottingham Forest could negotiate a deal with Burnley to take left-back talent Josh Doig on loan, according to reports.

Forest are in need of a new left-sided defender this summer, and have been keen on the young Scot.

He was left out of Hibernian’s squad on Sunday as they beat Motherwell 3-2 in their Scottish Premiership opener, with manager Jack Ross deciding it was best to omit Doig with a move “very likely” to take place soon.

As to his destination, confusion reigns. The Mail have reported that Watford and Burnley are the leading contenders, with the duo both willing to put forward more than £4m, offers that would see Hibernian part with the 19-year-old.

Fresh bid

Brentford have reportedly launched a second bid for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson.

The newly-promoted Premier League side are hoping that £6million will be enough to persuade Forest to sell the 20-year-old, according to The Sun.

Johnson spent last season on loan at League One side Lincoln City and scored 13 goals in 49 appearances under the management of Michael Appleton.

His impressive displays are said to have caught the eye of Brentford, who are building their squad with Premier League survival in mind.

Garner update

Sheffield United have “joined the race” for Nottingham Forest target James Garner.

Forest have been keen for their former loanee to return to the City Ground but the Manchester United youngster is now the subject of interest from elsewhere.

Championship rivals Sheffield United have made Garner a target, according to The Sun.

Both clubs are interested in taking the 20-year-old on loan for the coming season after he impressed for Forest last term.

Buchanan latest

Nottingham Forest’s pursuit of Derby County defender Lee Buchanan has “stalled”, according to reports.

Forest boss Chris Hughton is keen on bringing reinforcements to the City Ground with the Reds short of options at left-back.

Tyler Blackett is the Reds’ only senior option in the position, but he faces a month on the sidelines due to an injury; Jordan Gabriel has featured in the position for Forest in pre-season but lacks Championship experience.

Nicholas Ioannou left to join Italian side Como in the summer and Yuri Ribeiro was allowed to leave.

Options considered

As Nottingham Forest target Sandro Kulenovic ponders his future, the Reds could yet face a fight for his signature.

Strengthening up front is a priority for boss Chris Hughton before the summer transfer window closes.

He needs to add more goals to his squad if they are to challenge for a top six spot in the upcoming Championship season, after struggling to find the back of the net last time around.

Dinamo Zagreb striker Kulenovic is on the club’s radar, amid suggestions a loan move to the City Ground has been put forward.

On the move?

Nottingham Forest-linked striker M’Baye Niang is said to have agreed a move to Italy.

Reports in France suggested the Reds had been in touch with Rennes about the frontman as they look to strengthen their attacking resources this summer.

It was claimed Celtic and Anderlecht had also made contact, while an approach from FC Nantes had been turned down, and several Turkish sides were also keeping tabs.

However, according to Sky Sports Italy, Niang has “said yes” to a switch to Venezia, with his transfer “getting closer and closer”.

Flemming update

Nottingham Forest and Fortuna Sittard are said to still be in disagreement over the value of attacking midfielder Zian Flemming.

The Reds are understood to have made more than one bid for the 22-year-old, but reaching a compromise with his club appears to be proving difficult.

Flemming is generally estimated to be worth about £1.5m, but Fortuna are believed to be asking for a few million more than that, as they hold firm.

So far, Forest’s attempts to sign him have seemingly hit a brick wall, with reports in the Netherlands suggesting they were even prepared to include some players in any deal.

Gabriel interest

Boss Lee Johnson has refused to be drawn on talk of Sunderland’s interest in Nottingham Forest defender Jordan Gabriel.

But he has outlined the kind of transfer targets he has in place as he works towards making summer signings.

The Black Cats are understood to be keen on signing Reds full-back Gabriel, along with Blackpool, where the youngster had a successful spell on loan last season.

The 22-year-old is currently Forest’s only senior right-back, however, after Cyrus Christie returned to parent club Fulham, while Carl Jenkinson has been told he is free to seek out a move elsewhere this summer.

Yates’ decision

Nottingham Forest target Jerry Yates was always keen to stay at Blackpool this summer, according to boss Neil Critchley.

The 24-year-old signed a new deal with the Seasiders last week, with his manager hoping that dampens the transfer speculation which had been swirling.

A number of clubs had been keeping tabs on the front man, with the Reds believed to be among them, as well as Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion and Scottish giants Rangers.

But Critchley says Yates’ intention has always been to wear the number nine shirt in the Championship for Blackpool, following their promotion – and he penned a fresh three-year contract on Friday.

Full-back linked

Nottingham Forest have been linked with a move for former Arsenal full-back Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill.

Chris Hughton is keen to add to his squad this summer as Forest aim to challenge for the Championship play-off places in the upcoming season.

One area where the club are likely to strengthen is in the full-back positions with Hughton short on options in the position following the departure of Yuri Ribeiro and the injury to Tyler Blackett.

According to HullLive, Forest are now interested in Excelsior Rotterdam defender Ormonde Ottewill.

Transfer challenges

Boss Chris Hughton has spoken of the difficult transfer market Nottingham Forest face as they look to add to their squad.

Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath is the Reds’ only new addition of the summer so far, with less than a fortnight to go before the new season begins.

New chief executive Dane Murphy, though, set out his transfer strategy in his first round of media interviews on Friday – identifying a need to go after players other clubs are not targeting, in a bid to “out-work and out-think your competitors”.

Hughton says that tallies with his own approach to signings as he looks to achieve a balance between youth and experience in the dressing room.

Defender search

Defender Tyler Blackett faces up to a month out of action as Nottingham Forest continue their search for a left-back.

The former Reading man has undergone an operation on a groin problem and is set to miss the start of the new campaign.

The Reds are desperately short on options in that position. Youngster Jayden Richardson has been heavily involved in pre-season, while Loic Mbe Soh started there in Forest’s fourth run-out at Crewe Alexandra.

It was a change in position for the latter, who is more accustomed to playing at centre-back. He was replaced in the second half of the 2-2 draw by Gaetan Bong – one of the four players who had been told they were free to move on this summer.

CEO on transfers

New CEO Dane Murphy says there will be outgoings as well as incomings at Nottingham Forest before the transfer window closes.

Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath is the Reds’ only new addition so far, after he joined on a three-year deal last week as a free agent.

Twelve players officially left the City Ground at the end of June as contracts and loan deals expired, while Nicholas Ioannou has since gone on a season-long loan to Como 1907.

Gaetan Bong, Carl Jenkinson, Harry Arter and Fouad Bachirou have been told they are free to move on this summer, while there has been interest from elsewhere in the likes of Joe Worrall, Jordan Gabriel and Brennan Johnson.
