The 2021 SWAC football season started the first full week of the year with a series of interesting and exciting games.

The reigning SWAC champions got away with a win in an exciting game, a league favorite disappointed on his season debut and a new contender appeared in the conference.

The SWAC was the only HBCU majority conference where most of their teams played games during the spring season (Alcorn State didn’t play games; Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman weren’t members of SWAC in the spring).

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs won the SWAC championship that spring and defeated the UAPB Golden Lions to claim their first conference title

Before the Bulldogs victory, Alcorn State was the two-time defending champions of the SWAC but had no chance to defend his title as it skipped the season.

They returned to the field at the MEAC / SWAC Challenge last weekend to make a statement that they are still the kings of the conference. However, the lengthy absence proved to be too much when they were upset by the North Carolina Central Eagles.

In contrast, the remaining SWAC teams returned to the field with significant reps in the game (excluding Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman) so the “rust” excuse would not apply in the event of poor performance.

Let’s take a look at how the games went and who stood out from the crowd.
