Today is the day you need to sort your Fantasy Premier League team, with the 6:30 p.m. deadline looming.

So who should you choose and who should you avoid?

We looked at the statistics from last season to show you the players with the most points. While there is no guarantee that they will restore the goods, it is probably the best yardstick you can get for seeing how the players are likely to fare within the game’s scoring system.

Let’s take a look at each position. You can see all the rules and how you collect points here.

Best goalkeepers last season

Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa): points = 186, cost = 5.5 m

Ederson (Man City): points = 160, cost = 6m

Illan Meslier (Leeds): points = 154, cost = 5 m

There isn’t much of a difference in the cost of different goalkeepers or in the points they score. Meslier is among the cheaper goalkeepers, but Martinez is the most popular pick after what he did last year.

Best defenders last season

Any Robertson (Liverpool): points = 161, cost = 7.0m

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool): points = 160, costs = 7.5 m

Aaron Cresswell (West Ham): points = 153, cost = 5.5m

One big caveat here is Robertson’s current injury, so avoid him in the first place.

Aaron Cresswell was last season’s bargain buy so might be worth a try again.

Best midfielders last season

Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd): points = 244, costs = 12 m

Mo Salah (Liverpool): points = 231, costs = 12.5 m

Sohn (Tottenham): points = 228, costs = 10m

In midfield you earn your money in this game. Salah and Fernandez both cost a lot of money, but you need to have at least one of them on your fantasy team if you are hoping for a successful season. The same could be argued for Son, so save money elsewhere and spend a lot in midfield.

Best striker last season

Harry Kane (Tottenham): points = 242, cost = 12.5 m

Patrick Bamford (Leeds): points = 194, cost = 8 m

Jamie Vardy (Leicester): points = 187, cost = 10.5 m

Kane is a fascinating one. It’s hard to say how much he’ll actually play in the first week or two given the speculation about his future.

However, if he moves to Man City, he will score a respectable number of goals.

Bamford was hands down last season’s bargain hunter on your fantasy team. Can he do it all over again?
