We are less than three weeks from the start of the Premier League Season and clubs begin to finalize their squads.

The transfer window will close in late August, which will give the sides another month, but ideally they will try to complete all of their work before kick-off.

Interestingly, the Premier League’s biggest clubs seem to have prioritized their defense in this window. Of the top six teams, four have already added a center-back to their squad or are expected to do so.

But how does that leave the state of their defense?

Well, we’ve decided to rank the six best center-back duos based on the current status.

with Manchester United set to signing of. complete Raphael Varane is imminent and Tottenham is in negotiations to buy Cristian Romero from Atalanta, we have added these two players to their respective teams.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at the top six center-back duos in the Premier League and rank them from worst to best:

6th – Tottenham | Cristian Romero and Joe Rodon

As mentioned earlier, Spurs are in talks to sign Romero and reports of a £ 40m deal have been discussed. He is the club’s main target and would make a very good signing after impressing in Serie A.

Welshman Joe Rodon is likely to be at his side. The 23-year-old has played all of Wales’ games at Euro 2020 and is clearly a talented defender.

The Argentine and Rodon may take some time to partner, but it could be something Nuno Espirito Santo is holding onto.

5. – Arsenal | Gabriel and Ben White

Ben White has yet to officially sign for Arsenal before his £ 50m move but it is only a matter of time now. The 23-year-old is an exciting new addition for the Gunners.

His partner this season is likely to be 23-year-old Gabriel, who signed for £ 27m last summer. The Brazilian had a mixed debut season but will certainly have benefited from a year in English football.

There are concerns that the two 23-year-olds may be a little too inexperienced to compete as central defenders at the highest level.

4th – Chelsea | Thiago Silva and Antonio Rüdiger

Okay, Chelsea usually play with three center-backs so this is not entirely correct, but if the Blues played four at the back, Silva and Ruidger would be the partnership.

In truth, Thomas Tuchel’s side likely needs another center-back to add to their squad despite the many options that include Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma, among others.

Silva showed his qualities last season but will turn 37 in September and it will be hard to expect him to play 38 Premier League games this season. In the meantime, Rüdiger can be inconsistent.

Perhaps a cause for concern for Chelsea supporters.

3rd – Liverpool | Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate

There are a few caveats to this partnership.

Can Van Dijk return to his best form after almost 12 months of injury with a serious knee injury? The Dutchman is expected to make his long-awaited return in a friendly against Hertha Berlin on Thursday.

After a defensive injury crisis last season, the Reds switched to the 22-year-old Ibrahima Konaté from RB Leipzig for £ 36 million. The Frenchman looks like a real talent but may need time to familiarize himself with Premier League football.

It’s a partnership that could be incredible, but we’re not sure we’ll see the best of them anytime soon.

2. – Manchester United | Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane

This will no doubt upset a lot of Man Utd fans, but we’re only using Maguire and Varane as the second best defensive partnership in the Premier League.

Why only second?

Despite his heroics over the summer, we are still not convinced that Maguire is one of the best defenders in world football.

The £ 42million deal to sign Varane will be finalized very soon and he will bring a lot of experience and quality from Real Madrid.

We can’t deny that the pair could make an impressive center-back pairing, but we believe there is a slightly better one in the league …

1. – Manchester City | Ruben Dias and John Stones

After the last season, it is impossible not to place slides and stones in first place. The pair established themselves as a formidable pair last season, keeping Aymeric Laporte away from the squad.

Dias ‘no-nonsense defense paired with Stones’ ball game skills gave City a nice balance at the heart of their defense as they sauntered to Premier League glory.
