Manchester United have agreed with Real Madrid on a £ 41m transfer fee for defender Raphael Varane.
The price for the France international is estimated at £ 41m including add-ons, and the deal is set to close, subject to a medical examination.
After England international Jadon Sancho has already been signed by Borussia Dortmund for £ 73m, the takeover of Varane would be another letter of intent from United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team finished second in the Premier League last season but finished 12 points behind Manchester City.
Varane has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world after joining Real from French club Lens in the summer of 2011.
He played over 350 games for the club and was played 79 times by France, which helped him to the world title in 2018.
He started all four of France’s games at Euro 2020 before being knocked out by Switzerland on penalties.
If the deal goes as expected, Varane’s first mandatory action for United could come when they start their Premier League campaign against Leeds United at Old Trafford on August 14.
“One of the best central defenders in Europe”
Analysis by Spanish football expert Terry Gibson, speaking on Sky Sports News:
“If Man Utd get Varane over the line they’ll buy one of the best center-backs in Europe. He’s been fantastic at Real from day one, he has all the attributes you need and he’s easily overlooked because of Sergio Ramos.
“But in terms of quality, I don’t think there are many better than Varane.”

Sancho, whose move to Old Trafford was agreed in principle on July 1, underwent a medical exam earlier this month after attending Euro 2020.
He’s signed a five-year contract with United with an option for an additional year and Sancho will wear the No. 25 jersey for his new team.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists that despite speculation about his future at United, Paul Pogba is always professional
Pogba future in the air
One player at United with an uncertain future is Paul Pogba. With Paris Saint-Germain’s interest, it is “increasingly unlikely” to sign a new contract extension with Manchester United.
The talks between representatives of Pogba and United did not lead to a solution as reports reportedly rejected a specific offer from the French midfielder.
The 28-year-old has entered the final year of his current contract and United must now make a decision whether to sell him this summer or allow him to see his contract.
