The starters were delicious, but the main course for Week 1 of the 2021 college football season went up on Saturday with 18 teams in action and five games with top 25 teams against each other. The primetime matches were hard to beat, however, as No. 5 Georgia won a good old-fashioned defensive match against No. 3 Clemson in Charlotte. These heavyweight matches featured all kinds of NFL talent on both sides of the ball, but ultimately the defense prevailed. Elsewhere, No. 16 LSU was upset by UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

There was also a lot of good for the rest of the day. No. 1 Alabama and No. 18 Iowa had impressive wins over No. 14 Miami and No. 17 Indiana, respectively. No. 21 Texas got on the right foot in the Steve Sarkisian era with a compelling double-digit win over angry No. 23 Louisiana. At the dinner table, No. 13 Florida and No. 6 Texas A&M took care of business against FAU and Kent State, while No. 20 Washington suffered a breathtaking defeat against FCS opponents Montana.
