Around 300 fans at Paddy Park in Newcastle were thrilled when Raheem Sterling’s goal ensured England got off to a winning start in Euro 2020

The fans were wild in Newcastle when England got their Euro 2020 campaign off to a perfect start with a win against Croatia.

Around 300 fans came to England’s opening game at Paddy Park on Newcastle Quayside on Sunday.

Before kick-off, England fans were confident of a win, despite some concerns about England’s starting XI.

The blatant omission was Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, while Kieran Trippier was preferred to Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell as left-backs.

Former Newcastle United star John Beresford criticized the team selection before kick-off.

But fans loudly supported the national team when the game against Croatia began at Wembley.

England started well in the first half but the game seemed to fizzle out in the second quarter.

Raheem Sterling put the hosts in the 57th minute with a sovereign finish in the lead

Pints were thrown and chants were sung in scenes similar to the 2018 World Cup when England reached the semi-finals.

England ended the result with fans at Paddy Park singing the iconic tune of “It’s Coming Home” full time.

The 1-0 win made English fans cheer and thought Gareth Southgate’s men could go all the way at Euro 2020.

James Skoyles, 31, of Kenton, said, “It’s coming home.

“I really feel that we have a chance against top teams. I was pessimistic before, but now I really feel that we have a good chance of finishing this tournament and winning it.”

Micky Carling, 31, of Gateshead added: “It’s a massive result. It’s a big statement from England against a good team.

“That was a dominant performance. For me it was a solid performance and a good win.

“It’s great to come out and do something like this all over again.

“It’s so much better to watch the games with other people singing and dancing.

“It was a great day and I hope it can go on for the rest of the tournament.”
