Southampton has received a potential boost in pursuing Manchester United defender Brandon Williams.
What is the latest transfer news with Williams?
According to the Manchester Evening News, Williams is allowed to leave Old Trafford on a full season loan deal this summer so he can win more first-team football.
Southampton made a request about the 20-year-old’s availability earlier this season, but United chose to keep Williams at the club as defensive cover.
Now they are ready to let him move away for a year, which could lead Southampton to renew their interest in Williams, who can play as a right-back or left-back.
What were Williams’ stats like in 2020/21 season?
It’s easy to see why United granted Williams permission to go on loan next year as he has played so little this season.
The England U21 international played in just four Premier League games in 2020/21 as he was kept off the team by players like Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Alex Telles.
He was allowed to play six European games throughout the season as United reached the Europa League final, but throughout the season he was limited to less than 700 first-team minutes.
What did Scholes say about Williams?
Williams may have struggled for playing time this year, but that was less of an issue in his breakthrough 2019-20 season as he pitched 17 top games.
As a teenager joined the team, Williams made a very positive first impression and caught the attention of United legend Paul Scholes, who back in January 2020 claimed the youngster deserved to be ahead of Shaw in the pecking order.
As quoted by The Mirror, Scholes said, “You would have to choose him [Williams] at the moment. I like Luke Shaw, but he just can’t line up games.
“At the moment Brandon Williams is doing this, so he’s on pole position. He is an excellent defender but can also move forward.
“He’s got quality, he’s a talented boy and he’ll go up and down the pitch. He’s got two good feet, I think he’s more of a left-back with his right foot, which is weird.
“He has the quality to move forward and the quality to score goals.”
Would Williams be a good match for Southampton?
Judging Williams over the past 12 months is difficult given his lack of minutes on the pitch, but he showed enough in his first season at United to suggest that he could be a big win for Southampton if they do this summer can secure his signature.
Last year, Gary Neville stated that he was impressed with Williams’ desire to win games at all costs, and the Saints could use that kind of mentality in their locker room right now.
The team won just four of their last 21 league games in the 2020-21 season and fell back into the standings at an alarming rate. With Williams coming from a United team that wants to win every week, Williams is unlikely to accept such a dire streak of results, and his never-die demeanor could do wonders for the St 2021 area.
