With the 2021/22 Premier League season set to begin in just under four weeks, Watford is hoping for an encouraging return to this league after being promoted from the championship.
The Hornets’ renaissance, led by manager Xisco Munoz, took them to second place earlier this year.
Ahead of the Spaniard’s first full season on Vicarage Road, Watford has chosen to support his boss in the transfer market.
A proactive approach to the window has resulted in Munoz signing eight new players to put their own stamp on the club’s roster.
Not satisfied with these newcomers, the 40-year-old could enter the race for a person who showed great promise in Ligue 1 last season.
According to French news agency L’Equipe (as quoted by Sport Witness), Watford is one of many clubs reportedly interested in signing Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea.
The defensive midfielder is also closely watched by Crystal Palace, Lorient, RC Lens, Montpellier and West Bromwich Albion.
A recent report by Express & Star revealed that the Baggies had put forward an offer for Chalobah, who is currently reviewing his options before making a decision about his future.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is believed to be ready to sell the 22-year-old this summer as the midfielder is not part of the club’s long-term vision.
Chalobah helped Lorient prevent relegation to Ligue 2 during the previous season by making 29 appearances in the French top division.
Chalobah not only played in his preferred role in defensive midfield, but was also central defender of Les Merlus 13 times.
Joshua Cole from GIVEMESPORT says …
While it’s safe to say that Watford already has a ton of players to choose from in central midfield, it could turn out to be a smart deal for the club if they can sign Chalobah for a decent fee this summer.
During the previous campaign, the former loaner from Ipswich Town averaged the third highest WhoScored game rating at Lorient (6.82) in Ligue 1 and also ranked in the top 5 for interceptions per game (2.4) and clearings per game ( 1.9). .
Although Chalobah may take some time to get used to the Premier League life as he has never played in that league for Chelsea, there is no reason why he could not continue to do well at Watford as he is clearly one a very versatile player is a player.
Munoz may have to give the midfielder some playing time assurances if he is to close a deal, however, as Chalobah will have to play regularly for the years to come for the best chance of further development.
